Grassland Reserve Program Sign-Up Announced

Jay T. Mar, Connecticut State Conservationist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and Marsha Jette, State Executive Director for the Farm Service Agency (FSA) have announced that applications will be taken for the agencies Grassland Reserve Program (GRP). Deadline to receive applications is February 3, 2012.

“GRP is a voluntary program offering landowners the opportunity to protect, restore, and enhance grasslands on their property,” said Mar.

The program is offered through the 2008 Farm Bill and is jointly administered by NRCS and the Farm Service Agency (FSA). GRP helps landowners restore and protect grassland, pastureland, and certain other lands, as well as provides assistance for rehabilitating grasslands. The program will conserve vulnerable grasslands from conversion to cropland or other uses and conserve important grasslands by helping maintain viable farming operations.

“With the February 3rd deadline approaching, we are urging eligible farmers and producers to apply as soon as possible,” said Jette.

Interested landowners should contact the nearest USDA Field Office to submit an application.
