NRCS Sign-Up Period for Conservation Stewardship Program Extended

TOLLAND, CT –Are you a landowner interested in improving soil and water quality or wildlife habitat? Are you a landowner interested in adopting conservation activities that address the effects of climate change? If so, you should consider applying for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP).

“CSP is one of our most popular conservation programs, and we expect to receive many applications,” said Connecticut NRCS State Conservationist Jay T. Mar. “I encourage all farmers who are interested in applying to contact their local NRCS office as soon as possible.”

The ranking period cut-off date for CSP has been extended to January 27, 2012. Interested producers should submit applications to their local NRCS office by the deadline so their application can be considered.

A CSP self-screening checklist is available to help potential applicants determine if CSP is suitable for their operation. It highlights basic information about CSP eligibility requirements, contract obligations, and potential payments. It is available from local NRCS offices or online.

As part of the CSP application process, candidates will work with NRCS field personnel to complete the resource inventory using a Conservation Measurement Tool (CMT) that determines the conservation performance for existing and new conservation activities. The applicant’s conservation performance will be used to determine eligibility, ranking, and payments. For more information, contact your nearest USDA Field Office.
