USDA Announces Sign-Up Period for New York/New England Forestry InitiativeTOLLAND, CT – Connecticut State Conservationist for the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service, Jay T. Mar, has announced the sign-up period to apply for assistance through the New York/New England Forestry Initiative. “Forests not only provide clean water,” said Mar, “they form the backbone of rural economies by providing a sustainable source of renewable energy, forest products, outdoor-related recreational opportunities, and tourism.” Forests are home to countless types of fish and wildlife – many of which depend on large forest blocks. However, with much of this land being subdivided and sold, many forests are now at risk. The Forestry Initiative is an opportunity to improve wildlife habitat, forest health and productivity, and water quality on private forest lands. “Connecticut is one of only seven states offering this type of assistance,” said Mar. To be eligible, owners of private forest land must have an interest in a forestry operation or private woodlot. Producer records must be on file with the USDA-Farm Service Agency, and be compliant with the conservation provisions of the 2008 Farm Bill. Applicants must also own or control the land, and agree to implement conservation practices according to the contract schedule. Land is not eligible if it is currently enrolled in another Farm Bill program. Publicly owned lands are also not eligible. Although applications are accepted on a continuous basis, closing date for FY2012 funding is February 3, 2012. Interested landowners should contact the nearest USDA
Field Office to submit an application and complete the necessary paperwork
to establish eligibility. |
