Central Housatonic Watershed

Description of Watershed

The Central Housatonic Watershed is comprised of 355,519 acres in west central Connecticut. This area, renowned for its rural atmosphere, rolling farmland, densely wooded forests, and fragile soils is the result of millions of years of geologic, climatic, and human activity. One of the most important geologic features of this watershed is the underlying stratified-drift aquifer, the predominant source of potable water in the region.

Four contiguous 10-Digit Hydrologic Unit Codes make up the watershed.

Two thirds of the watershed is in Litchfield County, one-third in New Haven County, and a very small section in Hartford County.

The watershed has 430 farms, of which, 65% are less than 50 acres in size.
