Flood Plain Management Studies

What is the Focus?

Flood plain management studies are used by municipalities to examine water resource problems as a way to keep flooding problems from occurring, and to inventory natural resource values.

What Does NRCS Offer?

Planning assistance, hydrology and hydraulic models, natural resource inventories and assessments.

What is an Example of an Flood Plain Management Study?

SOMERS, CT – In the early 1990s, the eastern part of Somers was envisioned to be the next area where development would occur. The area contained four tributary watersheds of the Scantic River. There was concern that additional runoff from new development would cause flooding problems to roads, bridges, and possibly homes. The town entered into a number of agreements with NRCS through-out a 13-year period to study the four watersheds. The resulting reports provided the present and future condition hydrology and hydraulic models and programs to the town. Using the models, NRCS evaluated a variety of measures to reduce the impacts of future development.
