Increased availability of this natural resource information can help commissions better assess the needs of their communities.

Natural resource-based Geographic Information System (GIS) landscape analysis, participatory processes to engage stakeholders in landscape analysis and planning, technical assistance during the planning and implementation process, facilitation.

What is an Example of Community Landscape Analysis?

GUILFORD, CT – In December 2002, NRCS in Connecticut began working with representatives from local commissions and and town residents representative of various local interests to analyze local natural resources. The information developed through this collaborative effort is being translated into GIS-based maps. NRCS developed a detailed land use/land cover layer categorizing the local landscape, analyzed soil potential ratings for septic installation, and created an analysis of imperviousness for soils and land cover.  The Town of Guilford will be able to use this information, along with other analyses being conducted, to assist the community in developing strategies to implement action items listed in the recently completed Plan of Conservation and Development. The natural resources analyses developed through the community landscape analysis will also be used by the town in conjunction with information currently being developed through a smart-growth initiative, a natural resources inventory, and an economic commission report. The information will also be maintained on a town database and will be available to residents.
