Riparian BuffersWhat is the Focus? To establish, maintain, or restore native vegetation along streams and shorelines. Riparian (or waterfront) vegetation performs many functions important to streams and ponds such as shoreline and streambank stability, fish and wildlife habitat, and water quality protection. What Does NRCS Offer?Presentations, handbooks, fact sheets, technical assistance. What is an Example of a Riparian Buffer?NORWALK, CT – In cooperation with the Norwalk River Watershed Initiative, NRCS in Connecticut developed a riparian restoration plan for one of the industrial properties along the main stem of the Norwalk River. The project included the planting of native, non-invasive tree and shrub species. Seventeen different varieties (close to 400 individual plants ranging from 18” bare-root stock, to 2” caliper trees) were planted on site. The buffer was installed to reduce pollutants getting into the Norwalk River and to reduce geese populations . The original vegetation was removed to provide better public visibility of the facility along Route 7. Who are the Partners?
