HEAP Letter and ApplicationDear Horse Owner, The Horse Environmental Awareness Program (HEAP) is a coalition of federal and state agencies, organizations and individuals interested in protecting the environment by educating horse owners on good horse management practices. HEAP has no regulatory authority and its only interest is to help horse owners improve their management practices. If you have one horse or more and your horse-keeping practices are environmentally friendly, we have just the award for you. It is the Connecticut Horse Farm of Environmental Distinction award. Horse owners who qualify for the award are those who implement good manure, pasture and facility management practices. Practices such as covering manure piles and locating them away from surface water and wells, rotating pastures, installing fencing to keep horses out of streams and wetlands, and utilizing a sacrifice area. If you engage in any of these practices, or others, you should apply for this award! When you do, evaluators with experience in best management practices will
review your facility and provide a score based on how your management
practices decrease or eliminate impacts to the environment. If you receive a
qualifying score, you will receive a letter complimenting you for your
excellent work along with an attractive, aluminum 18” x 24” Horse Farm of
Environmental Distinction sign to proudly display at your facility. The award
only applies for the year you receive a qualifying score. You must re-apply
each year for the award to remain valid. If you do not receive a qualifying score, a letter will be sent to you with recommended management practices on how to improve your horse-keeping operation to help protect the environment. We encourage you to implement the recommended practices and to re-apply for the award the following year. All information obtained at the facility will be kept confidential and will only be used for evaluation purposes. If you do not want to participate in this program at this time, but would like to learn more about these best management practices, please call (203) 284-3663, Ext. 3. We can arrange to send you a packet of information, or if you wish, a specialist can visit your farm and make suggestions on how you can improve your horsekeeping practices to benefit the environment. Y So what are you waiting for? Apply today by calling (203) 284-3663!
