Northeast Research Needs Committee

Northeast Regional Cooperative Soil Survey Conference, Narragansett, Rhode Island
June 2-5, 2008

Chair: Larry West, National Leader for Investigations

Charges

Review and comment on ways to better link field scientists with university scientists in order to better communicate ideas for field research projects. In 2006, the Committee did not submit a report. In 2007, this charge was recommended at the National Conference.

Charges Identified for the 2008 Southern Cooperative Soil Survey Conference That May Be Of Interest:

  1. Identify and evaluate research needed in the Southern Region to accomplish soil surveys
  1. Class criteria for gypsum content in soil interpretations
  1. at what gypsum percentage does piping occur within the soil,
  2. at what gypsum percentage does cavern formation occur in soils,
  1. The “new soil survey” needs sampling requirements for dynamic soil properties. Identify existing data sets in the Southern Region that can be used to determine the spatial variability of near surface dynamic soil properties.
  2. Identify and/or suggest methods to predict highly variable soil properties such as infiltration from less costly measures
  1. Review status of 5-year Soil water table study
  2. Identify known elements of ground water Spodosols formation and develop model to predict their occurrence in landscapes
  3. Evaluate and identify ways to integrate soil spectroscopy tool into soil survey activities
